At 4km from Apt, between Rousillon and the Colorado de Rustrel, this village is overlooked by the rounded hill of Perréal with an elevation of 471 m and constitutes an important historic and geological site. A rich industrial heritage of ochre from the end of the 19th century still remains in Gargas which is also the last European village where ochre is still mined. Several hamlets are spread out through the countryside.
