Halfway between Cavaillon (to the east) and Manosque (to the west), is the town of Apt, a town in the center of the Luberon area.
Apt was founded on the old Domitian road (Via Domitia). Born from the ancient Gallo-Roman city "Apta Juilia" founded by Julius Caesar in 45 BC.
Today, vestiges of the ancient roman city still remain in the basement of the city. You can find them in dedicated museums or even in certain shops that have set up these ancient places to settle there.
Sainte Anne Cathedral is the most remarkable Historic Monument of the city. This building brings together more than a thousand years of successive architectural phases, ranging from the Carolingian period to the 20th century. The lower crypt is the vestige of a 1st century Roman building used for religious purposes. It consists of a corridor leading to a vault where local tradition has it that the veil of Saint Anne was found. The Sainte-Anne chapel was built in the middle of the 17th century. Anne of Austria largely helped finance the work.
You can attend mass every Sunday morning as well as all the Christian celebrations of the year.
This pleasant and typically Provençal town is full of treasures. World capital of candied fruit, the greediest will find here a real sanctuary where sun-kissed fruits ripen and where goat cheese, sunny vegetables, spices and all other flavors and scents of the south are sold on the illustrious Saturday market.
Aptesian candied fruits are world famous. These crystallized fruits have made Apt famous and have earned it the label "Site Remarquable du Goût".
Among its most remarkable treasures, you will of course find magnificent properties. In the town centre, along the quays, are several century-old townhouses which overlook the Calavon the river which crosses it. In the surroundings of the city, larger properties are sometimes hidden under the high plane trees, such as farmhouses or stone bastides, guardians of beautiful wine estates.
People from Apt enjoy festivals and events of all kinds throughout the year. The contest for the best galette des rois, the local ‘Corso’ (parade), the lavender festival in July, the grape harvest festival in September and many more.
Apt, town in the center of the Luberon which brings together the public services of the territory such as the hospital, the school complex, the Community of Communes, etc., but also the leisure activities such as the cinema, museums, the MJC (Youth & Culture Center) and the media library which bring together the inhabitants of the Luberon within it.
You will also find here supermarkets and many shops of all kinds: opticians, clothing, confectionery, toys, hairdressing and beauty salons, etc.
Apt is therefore an active city due to its shops, its cultural offers and all its various services, but it is also a city that has many companies that create jobs in the area. We can name some of them like Aptunion (the candied fruit factory) but also Delta plus, a listed company that manufactures all the accessories necessary for safety at work.
One of the great prides of Apt is also the company Blachère Illuminations. This company enlightens cities around the world with its creative and remarkable light decorations (the Champs Elysées at Christmas are illuminated by this company).
Blachère, also created an African art foundation. The Jean-Paul Blachère corporate foundation, since 2004, wants to participate in the development of Africa by helping contemporary creation and the promotion of its artists. In its art center, located in the heart of the company, in the heart of the industrial zone, it presents exhibitions and welcomes artists for long term residence. It also organizes creative workshops in Africa and Europe and participates in major African biennials. It is in charge of the conservation of the works of the Blachère Collection.
To resume, Apt is a historic city, with a prestigious past and a promising future. It is pleasant and offers its inhabitants varied entertainment throughout the year thanks to the various festivals to celebrate lavender, the grape harvest, and all these other events that follow one another over the seasons. Convenient ! It brings together all the services and establishments necessary for daily life. Everything is nearby, especially since the establishment of shuttles that roam on both sides of the city.
